How FairPrice works
FairPrice is a free, independent price checker for Ireland. Every morning it reads public listings and supermarket websites, then compares like with like, so you can see whether a price is fair before you pay it. Nobody pays to appear in the results and there are no adverts in them.
Used cars
Every car for sale on DoneDeal and Carzone, read each day: about 130,000 different cars, since a car listed on both sites counts once.
The fair price of a car is what cars of the same model, year, mileage, engine, fuel and gearbox are being sold for today, from a model fitted to the whole market each morning. On cars it has not seen, it is off by about 7% in the typical case. Each listing shows how far its price sits from that, and how sure we are: a rare model with few cars to compare against says so.
Tools: the best deals, check a listing by pasting its link, value your own car, price drops and prices by county.
Groceries
The full online range of SuperValu, Dunnes Stores and Aldi, and the Lidl Plus offers, read each day. Prices are compared per kilo, litre or item, so a 3 litre and a 1 litre carton of milk can be compared directly. Tesco is not included yet.
A national brand (Barry's, Kerrygold) is compared with the same product at other shops. A shop's own brand is compared with the nearest equivalent: same kind of product, pack size in range. A discount is checked against the price we saw before it, not only the shop's own "was" price.
Tools: the price guide (where milk, bread, tea and 40 more are cheapest), the weekly basket, your own shopping list priced at every shop, and this week's deals.
How fresh
Each source is read once a day, overnight. Data status shows when each was last read and whether it worked; a page says how old its prices are.
