Zastava Automobiles, founded in 1953, was a significant Serbian (formerly Yugoslav) automobile manufacturer that played a crucial role in motorizing Eastern Europe. The company began as a producer of military firearms before diversifying into automobile production under license from Fiat. Zastava became known for producing robust, affordable vehicles adapted for Eastern European conditions. Their most famous model, the Yugo, was exported globally and became one of the most affordable new cars available in many markets during the 1980s. The company developed expertise in adapting Fiat designs for local conditions, adding reinforced suspensions and modified components to handle rougher roads. Despite mixed reception in export markets, Zastava vehicles were praised for their simplicity, ease of maintenance, and affordability. The company's manufacturing facilities in Kragujevac were among the largest in Eastern Europe, employing thousands and contributing significantly to Yugoslavia's industrial development. Although production ceased in 2008, Zastava's legacy continues through the facility's current role in producing Fiat vehicles.
